How to talk about volcano eruption?

Postby Adriana Huber » April 20th, 2010, 1:24 am

Mitákuyepi!

(After missing my flight :D ) I was reflecting about how to talk about volcano eruptions in Lakota. The NLD Dictionary contains the word "volcano" (ȟeíle), but I didn't found any example sentence or verb for "to erupt". How, in lakota, we can describe the activity of makȟóȟloka mniwósli (ǧeysers) or volcanos?
For example, how we will say "The volcano ERUPTED" or "he has been SPEWING clouds of ashes"???.
It would be interesting to insert this words in the NLD.

Thank you all, Adriana

Háu, Adriana haŋkáši ! :)

Here is my attempt :

Ȟeíče kiŋ iglúȟičiŋ na opʼó waŋ otȟáwatʼešilya tȟaǧóše. > The volcano woke up and spat a huge cloud of dust.

Ȟeíče kiŋ iglúȟičiŋ na líla čhatá otá waŋkáyeye. > The volcano woke up and threw high a lot of ashes up.

I am far from being a fluent speaker. I am just a beginner and I don't know which sentence is the best (or the least bad). :?

Háu mitákuyepi,

I was thinking about the same thing (volcano eruption) when it happened in Iceland just recently. What do you all think about expression?

Ȟeíle waŋ hiyúič’iye.
A volcano erupted (lit. A volcano made itself pushed out abruptly.)

That is great, Ali.

I made up one for Skype, but not sure if is it correct...

Ȟeíle čhaȟóta kiŋ Iceland ektá wóinapȟeke. Kiŋyékhiyapi oínažiŋ kiŋ Europe ektá natȟákapi

The volcanic ash over in Iceland is dangerous.
Airports in Europe are closed.

Thanks

Good shot, Sisokaduta ! :good:

It seems indeed that the verb "napȟópA" is the most accurate.
