wapási wičháša etc

Discussion on words, their meanings and usage.

wapási wičháša etc

Postby NancyD » June 15th, 2010, 11:27 pm

Hi,

Today we have many women in what were traditionally a man's profession.

If we are talking about a woman who is a doctor, what word would we use?

Would it be wašíču wakȟáŋ wiŋ? Would one leave it as wašíču wakȟáŋ and the context would be understood
it was a woman?

What about wapási wičháša? How would we say that if the detective was a woman?

Would one say wapási wíŋyaŋ or again, leave it as wapási wičháša and the context would be understood it was a woman?

I am a bit confused about this.

Thanks,
Nancy
Warm Regards,
Nancy

Háu, Nancy haŋkáši ! :D

NLD gives wašíču > white person.
So wašíču wakȟáŋ wíŋyaŋ may be accurate if we are talking about a (white) woman who is a doctor. Ask Wendell or your sister-in-law... ;)
But why not use wapíya wíŋyaŋ > female healer, medecine woman and wapíya wičháša > healer, medecine man which are less ambiguous and more general.
As for a female detective, I think wapási wíŋyaŋ is very good since we can say wapási wičháša for a male detective.

Tókša akhé,

Daniel
